PAPER INDUSTRY URGED TO IMPROVISE TECH TO USE NON-WOOD MATERIALS
Article Abstract:
The pulp and paper industry has been asked to develop technologies for using non-forest based fibrous raw materials for expanding existing units or for setting up new paper manufacturing units. The demand for paper products has been increasing but paper units will be affected due to shortage of forest-based raw materials. The domestic area under forest cover is only 14 percent at present against an ideal cover of 33 percent. It is estimated that the Indian paper industry will require an additional investment of Rs15,000 crore by 2000 AD to meet the projected domestic demand. (khr)
