Packard Bell NEC plans Scotland plant

Packard Bell NEC is set to construct a personal computer manufacturing and distribution plant in Livingston in Scotland, UK, for 26 million pounds sterling ($42.3 million) in a move that will establish 825 new jobs by the year 2002. Packard Bell's international vice president, Michel Fromont, stated that the firm decided to build the facility in Scotland due to the region's availability of skilled workers, business infrastructure and transport links. Construction of the Livingston manufacturing and distribution facility is anticipated to double the firm's European PC production to three million units annually by 2002.

Dell to build 3rd plant in Ireland

Dell Computer Corp. will put up a $90-million manufacturing plant in Limerick, Ireland, its third, to become the largest employer in the high-technology sector in the country. The new plant, which will begin operations in 1999, will create another 1,700 jobs in Ireland, in addition to 3,000 jobs over a five-year period. Dell, which first came to Ireland in 1990, will have a total work force of 6,000 people when the new plant opens. Twenty-five percent of Dell's total annual sales is accounted for by its operations in Ireland, which is the company's gateway to the European market.

Psion's profit slid 98% in half

Psion PLC posted a decline of 98% in its pretax profits for the first-half of 1999. Psion is a manufacturer of palmtop computers based in the UK. The company's pretax profits reached 100,000 pound sterling (155,014 euros) during the period. In the same period in 1998, Psion posted 4.1 million pound sterling in pretax profits. The results include a 400,000 pound sterling exceptional net gain.
