H-P chief defends planned merger with Compaq

Carly Fiorina, the chief executive of Hewlett-Packard (H-P), defended her company's planned acquisition of Compaq Computer Corp. at a IDC Forum presentation. Fiorina said that those who were concentrating on the personal computer aspect of the deal were wrong to do so.

Packard, Hewlett heirs join to oppose Compaq acquisition; as opposition mounts, future of deal comes into question

David Packard has joined Walter Hewlett, friends since childhood, in opposing the acquisition of Compaq Computer Corp. Also, the 25 million shares of Packard Humanities Insititute will vote against it. The William R. Hewlett Revocable Trust and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation will vote against, as well. The company, under Carly Fiorina's leadership, remains committed to the deal.

H-P offers $300 million for tech firm Synstar
