Signal guns: ship attacks seen as sign of China's displeasure
Article Abstract:
Unmarked Chinese police vessels fired without warning on at least three merchant ships in international waters between Taiwan and Japan last Feb 2-3, 1993. The first two incidents drew a diplomatic protest from Japan with a consequent formal apology from China yet less than 24 hours after the apology, a Russian cargo ship near the island of Ishigaki, Japan was fired at by unmarked Chinese vessels. The incidents were speculated to be China's wayof showing naval power against Taiwan since reunification efforts were being stalled by the Taiwan ruling Kuomintang party.

Missed congeniality
Article Abstract:
The staging of the Nov. 1996 Miss World Pageant in Bangalore, India, caused feminist groups, right-wing politicians and other activist groups to demonstrate outside the Chinaswamy stadium. The contest was criticised for being offensive to the Hundu religion and female values but was backed by state officials who saw it as a useful public relations exercise for the nation. It was allowed to go ahead provided that no hint of offensive viewing was broadcast.
