Shock of the new: government moves to stem Asian influx
Article Abstract:
New Zealand is changing an immigration policy that encouraged Asian immigrants but may have also fueled growing racial tension. The new policy, announced July 20, 1995, will require immigrants to take a basic English- comprehension test, denying entry or charging a fee to those who fail it. New immigrants will also have to show a committment to New Zealand, perhaps through significant direct investment, and live in the nation long enough in two consecutive years to pay taxes. Country quotas are also in the works.

For cash and country
Article Abstract:
An offer by Rupert Murdoch this year triggered the professionalization of rugby union in New Zealand, but such a change was already in the wind. Rugby union, as opposed to rugby league, has long prided itself on the amateur status of even star players, though even in the 1950s many got payed time off for games and practice. A $545 million offer by Murdoch for tv rights to a new world rugby series offered the Intl Rugby Board a way to stem the flight of top players to rugby league.

Fletcher Challenge is the second-largest natural resources company in New Zealand. Huge debts and a fall in share prices forced the company to announce plans to cut its assets by as much as US$1.9 billion. The plan to shed some of its assets is a complete shift from past company pronouncements that it will keep full control over its subsidiaries. Cash badly-needed by the company will be raise through either full or partial divestment of assets.
