Pakistan is facing a severe economic crisis, and desperately needs the International Monetary Fund and other multilateral agencies to release $1.2 billion in loans suspended following the testing of nuclear weapons in May 1998. There is conflict within the Pakistani government about whether to sign the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, which the Group of Eight industrialized countries regards as a precondition for international economic assistance.

Article Abstract:
The poll preparations for the oncoming October 9 presidential election in Afghanistan are described. The plans of the president Hamid Karzai for dealing with warlords, the regional leaders, to ensure democratic poll processes are discussed. The security arrangements for the election made by international troops are also examined.
