The Japanese economy is slowing considerably, and the Bank of Japan is faced with hard decisions on monetary policy. It has been cutting interest rates since Apr 1991, but debt-loaded banks are reluctant to lend. This has led to a virtual collapse of monetary growth.

Japan's monetary implosion

An economic recovery in Japan in the near future is unlikely because of a credit and money-supply crunch. Banks give optimistic predictions, but are really much more concerned. Banks need to spend money on new investment, rather than covering debt and cash flow.
