Paradise lost: Indonesian properties find new monikers to please Jakarta
Article Abstract:
The Indonesian government asked property developers and business owners in the country to replace English names with Indonesian names in preparation for the 50th anniversary of Indonesian independence in Aug. 1995. The Home Affairs Ministry explained such a move would bolster the position of Bahasa Indonesia, the national tongue, and help reinforce the national identity. Most firms willingly complied with the request, but others expressed some reluctance, especially when translations turned out to be nonsensical or inadequate.
