Parallel partners
Article Abstract:
US computer manufacturers commonly use universities as research partners. Japanese computer companies, on the other hand, shun partnerships with local universities because of bureaucracy and incompatibility with research directions. While most Japanese computer companies have collaborated with US universities, these have attracted negative media coverage. In its effort to gain a research partner, Fujitsu Ltd has turned to the Centre for Information Science Research at the Australian National University. The $15 million grant is expected to benefit both entities.

Waste from water
Article Abstract:
Water, contrary to what most people believe, is becoming scarce. Data show that a household uses 500 to 1,000 liters of water daily. While dams have been the traditional solution, their construction has become difficult because appropriate territory has been hard to find. The usual waste disposal methods have likewise become impractical. Memtec, an Australian company, has come up with a revolutionary water filtration system that promises to be cheap and energy-efficient.

Screen partners: Taiwanese cooperate with Japanese LCD firms
Article Abstract:
Taiwanese computer companies are trying to persuade Japanese liquid crystal display (LCD) manufacturers to part with the latest in active-matrix or color technology. However, Japanese firms seem reluctant to part with the technology. At present, local notebook computer manufacturers utilize passive matrix or monochrome technology. Government scientists are also conducting research on the thin-film technology required to make color LCDs.
