Parndorf wird Tourismus-Metropole
Article Abstract:
A group of international investors is proposing to build a big leisure and theme park in Parndorf, Austria, next to a factory outlet centre. The centre with a net area of 180,000 sq.m would comprise facilities such as a Family Entertainment Centre, a Children's Land, a Mexico Western World, an Arizona Desert, a high-tech area with computer games and various simulators, swimming baths, an aquarium, a dolphinarium, an English Garden, restaurants, and a 3-floor hotel with 120 beds. Also 3,000-4,000 parking spaces are to be provided. Just under Sch 700mn of the nearly Sch 2bn investment is to be provided by Brussels-based European Tourism Coordination Center, Eisenstadt-based Infratech GmbH, London-based Leisury Development & Management, Toronto-based Ron McCarthy Leisure Ltd and Kramar, Sixt & Partner. As Parndorf is in Burgenland which is an objective 1 zone, European Union funding is to be sought for the project that would create 350 jobs. A feasibility study suggests that the number of visitors might amount to 1.5mn per year. Construction start for the project that is subject to an official approval and an environment impact study is not likely before mid-1999.

Westautobahn wird total saniert 30 Milliarden f r L ckenschlu
Article Abstract:
The Austrian economics ministry has asked the state-owned motorway financing firm Asfinag to make plans for the extension and completion of Austria's motorway network. A total of Sch 30bn, or Sch 600mn annually, is available for this purpose until 2010. A major project is the refurbishment and extension of the Westautobahn, the motorway between Vienna and Salzburg. Sch 8bn, instead of the previously planned Sch 11bn, is to be spent on this project. To save costs, the foundations of the shoulder lane will be prepared in such a way that it can be used as a regular third lane at some time in the future. In addition, passing places will be built on the side which can later be connected to form a new shoulder. Only the section between Enns and Haid (around Linz) will be extended to three lanes from the start. Other projects covered by the Sch 30bn budget are the completion of the Pyhrn motorway, the expansion of the motorway over the Pack and the second tube for the Plabutsch tunnel.

Ein Drittel der TRW-Mannschaft wird gehen m ssen
Article Abstract:
US seatbelt producer TRW is planning to move part of its production from Bergheim/Salzburg to eastern Europe. This is in line with the group's policy of moving labour-intensive activities to low-wage countries. The high-tech unit will remain in Bergheim, explained, managing director G nter Brenner, denying rumours that the Austrian subsidiary is to be shut down completely. He did not deny nor confirm speculations that around 400 jobs will be lost, but said that job cuts could be "about in this range". Currently TRW Bergheim has around 600 fixed employees and some 100 workers with term contracts. To cope with the current excellent order situation, up to 100 temporary workers will have to be employed in the coming weeks.
