Pass the buck: OECD overhauls aid to focus on property
Article Abstract:
Western government have for years put vast sums of public money into energy, power and telecommunications projects in Asia, which was often an easy way for donor nations to boost exports of high cost equipment and services. It also gave Asian governments better access to funds. However the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has set strict new rules for their tied aid operations so that money will now go to schemes which have direct development benefits and is not used for projects that are commercially viable.

Stamp of approval: Bangladesh wins critical aid
Article Abstract:
Bangladesh has been awarded help from donor countries at a meeting in Paris, France, in Sep 1996. The World Bank supports the new Awami League government and its promise to tackle corruption and poverty. Donors are especially concerned about the alleviation of poverty, and aid projects to achieve this include investment in education and health, rural infrastructure and programs paying food for work. Donors also want the government to sell state enterprises, some of which have suffered losses.

Spoke in the wheels EU's probe of Taiwan bicycle imports raises hackles
Article Abstract:
The European Union Commission is looking into claims by French, German and Italian companies that increasing sales of bikes made in Taiwan are damaging their production and prices. Taiwan bikes sold in Europe are usually more expensive but exporters claim that they are of high quality, produced by leading-edge technology. Some believe that if high duties are imposed on the top Taiwanese bicycle brands they will become too expensive to import.
