John Garnett: memories of a communicator
Article Abstract:
After a twenty-five years as the leader of the Industrial Society, John Garnett reviews his career in industrial relations. His early years as an enlisted man in the British Navy and as a clerk in a large corporation taught him the several valuable lessons: the importance of communication to strong leadership; the importance of leadership to productivity; and the importance of persevering in communications until settlements can be found. The goals of the Industrial Society under his leadership were to upgrade workplace leadership, clarify work objectives and their significance to employees, and to create a positive management-union relationship. Although the Industrial Society has often been criticized by academicians for being old fashioned, its practical, common sense approach to management problems has led to many tangible accomplishments in the labor relations field.achievements in education are discussed.
