Paying the dues
Article Abstract:
Indonesia during the 1980s achieved high economic growth without incurring unsupportable foreign debt. Three factors account for Indonesia's avoidance of default: judicious investment of windfall oil profits; economic policy reforms such as devaluing the currency; and rigorous fiscal and monetary policy to prevent overheating the economy. Issues that will dominate the economic policies of the next 25 years include Pres Suharto's new cabinet, the achievement of fiscal independence, control of conglomerates and the need to stay ahead of competing Asian nations.
