Peak practice
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom, National Health Service (NHS) has faced a crisis of a lack of intensive care provision in winter 1999 to 1999 due to a shortage of nurses. There may also be more demand from patients seeking help with influenza, and hospitals may have focused to much on non-urgent operations to have prepared sufficiently for the winter. There has been a drop in hopital beds, and this could continue, though it may have already reached a level where there is not enough spare capacity. There is no clear answer to this issue, and too great a focus on beds could deter hospitals from using them efficiently.

Birmingham Health Authority is seeking to improve family physician facilities to ease pressure on hospitals. There is a debate on whether a new hospital should be built, or whether exisiting hospitals should be modernized.
