Pearson profit soars on strength in U.S., gains at newspaper

Pearson PLC of the United Kingdom posted soaring net profit, up 624 million Pounds ($1.09 billion) in 2005 from 262 million Pounds in 2004. Sales rose nine percent to 4.1 billion Pounds from 3.7 billion Pounds last year. Strength in revenue was due to a profit at the Financial Times and increased earnings at its education unit in the United States.

Pearson's Chief sticks with plan, won't sell assets

Pearson PLC of the United Kingdom is not planning to divest assets although net profit fell 98 percent. Net income decreased to 7 million Pounds ($13 million) in the first half from 337 million Pounds last year. Revenue is up by 16 percent to 1.88 billion Pounds.
