Peer pressure
Article Abstract:
The controversy over the appointment of Gus Macdonald, a successful businessman, as Scottish Industry Minister raises a number of interesting issues. It indicates that many people believe that political service should be ranked more highly than wider experience when selecting ministers. There would be cause for concern if the government were appointing many ministers from outside the House of Commons, but this is clearly not the case. Many MPs seem to regard the House of Commons as merely a generator of jobs, and seem to focus only on the prospects for promotion.

Freaks under pressure
Article Abstract:
Athletes in all sorts of sports have tended to be bigger as time has gone by, and this may help their performance in some sports, but smaller people can often perform better than bigger people. Speed and agility are important in badminton, and this means that smaller players can perform better. A large lungs and heart are important, and long legs help with high jumps. Runners of marathons tend to be thin, while jockeys tend to be small. Cricket is a game where technique is especially important, and players can have a range of physical types.
