People making things happen
Article Abstract:
Architectural Advisor and Former Civil Servant Rory Coonan has influenced many important pieces of architectural legislation, such as helping to create the architecture unit in the 1994 Lottery Act. Conan has advised many different agencies over architectural matters, such as English Partnerships. He hopes to undertake a architectural research project in the future. Coonan suggests some of the money taken by the government, from the construction industry, should be used to improve the public environment. Coonan helped to set up the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts.

Communicating the contemporary
Article Abstract:
The Design Museum in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition of the work of designers Charles and Ray Eames. The main themes of this exhibition are how to produce furniture that is both affordable and good quality, how to help people see beauty in ordinary objects, how to construct economical but well-designed working and living spaces, how to make basic scientific principles accessible to ordinary people and how to help different cultures understand each other. The exhibition emphasizes the importance of affluent capitalist consumerism in their work.

Urban spaceman
Article Abstract:
It is a great challenge to try to make buildings speak without the use of language, according to Bill Hillier, professor of architectural and urban morphology at the Bartlett School of UCL. He has worked with colleagues since the early 1980s to develop Space Syntax, a way of understanding urban and built form. This approach is becoming more sophisticated with each project in which Hillier is involved. He is particularly interested in multi-disciplinary approaches which allow different methods to be discussed.
