Performance analysis of assembly systems with unreliable machines and finite buffers

Article Abstract:

An unreliable assembly system is examined, where different types of components are processed by two separate work centers before merging to an assembly station with random breakdown. The situation of blocking at the work centers and starvation at the assembly centers may occur due to limited buffer sizes and uncertainties in job arrival times and processing/assembly times. The system stability condition is derived, and formulas applied for system state probabilities, blocking probabilities, starvation probability, stockout probability and system availability in the stable state.

The concept of the degree-constrained minimal spanning tree (DCMST) consists of finding links in a network to connect a set of terminal nodes to a central node while minimizing the expected annual expenditure.
