Perils of restructuring Indonesia weigh on the minds of domestic and international investors
Article Abstract:
The Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency (IBRA) is faced with a formidable task of restructuring the financial sector of the country and its decisions could mean the difference between success and failure. IBRA is faced with the decision to close down or keep open banks that have failed to meet the government deadline for making good on credits received and the decision could produce powerful repercussions. An extension could slow down reform while adherence to the deadline would close down may banks and slow down economic growth.

Economy flush with cash; liquidity fuels growth as foreign funds wane
Article Abstract:
A huge amount of liquidity is fueling economic growth in China. The surge of dollars in Chinese banks developed as a result of the swelling trade surplus which hit $43.6 billion in 1998. Thus, individuals equalled $645 billion in local-currency savings accounts while hard-currency deposits reached 25%. The four primary Chinese banks have loaned about 70% of all domestic lending which shows an increase of 15.5% over 1997 figures. At the same time, deposits have grown by about 16%.
