Photomonument
Article Abstract:
The 'Along the Road to Samarkand' exhibition at the Courtauld Institute galleries covers photographs of Middle Eastern monuments taken by T.E. Lawrence, A. W. Lawrence and Robert Byron. Byron, who wrote about architecture and art, was also a very good photographer, and his strong sense of the visual is also reflected in his writings. He aimed to compile a comprehensive architectural record of his travels in the Middle East, but the photographs by the Lawrence brothers lack this aesthetic sense.
