Perot's patriot games
Article Abstract:
A television report revealed presidential candidate Ross Perot's covert efforts to establish high-level business connections in Hanoi while acting as negotiator in behalf of missing-in-action American servicemen in Indochina. This revelation, denied by Perot, gave rise to varied reactions. Some think it could lead people to become suspicious of Perot's motives. Others view the report as reflective of Perot as businessman with humanitarian concern. Still others say that it could be a ploy by the Hanoi government to discredit Perot in exchange for favorable treatment from a future Bush government.

How to handle America: US and Japan open far-reaching trade talks
Article Abstract:
US-Japanese trade talks began on Jun 11, 1993 in Washington, DC. These initial talks were intended to set up the framework for the far more extensive and difficult trade negotiations to come. These negotiations will be difficult because the two countries strongly disagree about how to shrink the US trade deficit with Japan. This deficit stood at $49.4 billion in 1992. The Clinton administration wants a cut in Japan's current-account surplus and favors opening up particular Japanese markets to US exports. Japan's government opposes numerical trade goals as a violation of free trade.

Back to the world: progress on MIAs boosts chance of Vietnam ties
Article Abstract:
Vietnam has opened archives and other records on missing-in-action (MIA) personnel and has promised to furnish additional information. This cooperative stance could help the country secure foreign aid and financing for development projects. While the US continues to relate the sanctions to the issues of MIAs and human rights, Japan and international lending organizations such as the International Monetary Fund and World Bank have already extended humanitarian aid to Vietnam. Lifting of the embargo would enable Vietnam to normalize international economic and diplomatic relations.
