The Pol Pot trail; UN efforts to end Khmer Rouge trade likely to fail
Article Abstract:
The illegal border-trade between the Khmer Rouge and Thailand is not likely to stop in spite of efforts by United Nations Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali to impose sanctions against the Khmer Rouge and force it to adhere to the 1991 Paris accord. The UN Transitional Authority (UNTAC) in Cambodia intends to ban the Khmer's timber trade and thereby cut off the guerrilla group's funds, but Thailand is unwilling to comply. Meanwhile, Khmer Rouge activists are threatening violence if the UN continues to pressurize them.

The war party: Khmer Rouge intransigence threatens peace
Article Abstract:
The Khmer Rouge's non-compliance with Phase Two of its ceasefire agreement with the UN is deemed ominous. Compounding the international body's worries is its incapacity to compel the Khmer Rouge to honor the agreement and the Khmer Rouge's accusations against the UN itself. The party alleges that the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia is guilty of partiality and failure to abide by major provisions, including furnishing proof of government dissolution and Vietnamese departure from Cambodia.
