Perseverance pays: Sony demonstrates why it's still no. 1
Article Abstract:
Sony once again tops a list of corporate leaders in Japan that has changed little since Far Eastern Eocnomic Review's 1995 annual REVIEW 200 survey. The company's fortunes have improved thanks to stronger management and an improvement in the markets where it is strongest, but Toyota Motor mounted a strong challenge for the top slot this year, thanks to its financial solidity. Video-game maker Nintendo struggled to hold onto third place with rivals gaining market share and other companies less interested in emulating it.

The better to see you; can Asian companies produce a new kind of TV?
Article Abstract:
Japanese manufacturers hope to achieve flat, wide-screen TVs that can hang on the wall, mostly using technology developed elsewhere. The two most promising methods that could replace the cathode ray tube are the liquid- crystal display screen and the gas-plasma display. Each can make a screen at least 40 inches in size, compared with the practical 31-inch limit on CRT TVs. These technologies are not in widespread commercial use elsewhere and Japan could capture the market, but other technologies still compete.

The road less travelled
Article Abstract:
Some Japanese companies are moving their southeast Asian manufacturing operations back to Japan. The weakening of the yen no longer makes offshore manufacturing imperative to maintain competitiveness. The move is unlikely to become wide-spread, but the technological demands of the fast-changing electronics industry, where key parts can only be manufactured in Japan, make local assembly more cost effective. The trend is unlikely to have effects on job availability in either southeast Asia or Japan.
