Pass go and collect 200 pounds sterling (an hour)
Article Abstract:
Companies can incur large costs when making bids, and this is illustrated by the cases of Trafalgar House in its bid for Northern Electric, and LASMO's defense against Enterprise Oil. The latter cost 24 million pounds sterling, while Trafalgar House could pay up to 60 million pounds sterling. UK companies have become accustomed to high fees, and tend to pay for services at the going rate rather than seek the cheapest price. Some observers argue that there should be greater transparency over fees.

The agony and the ecstasy
Article Abstract:
UK investment banking has seen a number of changes in 1st half 1995, including the takeover of two banks, S.G. Warburg and Barings, with Kleinwort Benson to follow. Banks from continental Europe have shown interest in these banks, a trend which surprises some observers. UK mergers and acquisitions could be fuelled by cash being accumulated by many companies. Some firms may also seek to complete takeovers prior to the next election in case the political climate proves more hostile to such moves.
