The UK market for pet food amounted to 2.21 billion pounds sterling in 1998, up 21.9% from 1994. The sector has increased in value partly because of a move towards premium and super-premium products. Dog food is the largest part of the market with a 42.6% value share in 1998, although cat food sales grew by 30.5% during the period. Nestle is the leading brand in both dog and cat food sectors with a 30.4% value share, followed by Mars subsidiary Pedigree Masterfoods with a 27.6% share. The total pet food and pet care products market was worth 2.21 billion pounds sterling in 1998 and is set to reach 2.31 billion pounds sterling by 2003.

Pedigree accounted for 42% of the total value market in 1995, with Spillers taking a 29% share. Some 19% of the value market is held by own-label brands. It is expected that the UK pet food and accessories market will rise in 1997 and 1998, reaching some 1.68 billion pounds sterling by 2000.
