Article Abstract:
Large mergers and alliances have become an increasingly common feature of the telecommunications industry. Most recently, British Telecommunications has reached an agreement with AT&T, while Bell Atlantic is in a deal with GTE. The growing interest in mergers is being fuelled by the concept of size being very significant. However, there are many examples in the telecommunications industry of size bringing diminishing flexibility. It is clear that joint ventures will not be successful unless they are constantly monitored and allowed to evolve.

WorldCom tucks in - again
Article Abstract:
WorldCom's $30 billion bid for MCI Communications could dramatically change the face of the telecom industry. If the bid is successful, British Telecom will be thwarted in its own efforts to acquire MCI. WorldCom estimates the two firms could save $2.5 billion during the first year of the merger.
