Storm clouds
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's economic indicators appear very positive but it would be difficult for analysts to predict that this will continue, particularly considering the economic picture in the rest of Asia. Taiwan's GDP growth was an annualized 6.9% for the third quarter of 1997, and GDP growth for 1997 looks set to be 6.7%. Investment is also good, unemployment is 2.6% and inflation is 1.1%. However, inflationary pressures are likely to increase, low growth in Asia may affect Taiwan's exports, and a falling currency in South Korea improves the competitiveness of South Korean goods which rival those produced in Taiwan.

Collateral damage
Article Abstract:
Jitters over China's military exercises in July and Aug 1995 helped dampen Taiwan's economic growth but strong trade figures and other data suggest the harm is slight. GDP growth in 1995 will hit 6%, down from a predicted 6.9%, thanks partly to a three-month outflow of $8 billion and soaring currency deposits. Two-way trade in the first 11 months rose 21% to nearly $200 billion, creating a $6.8 billion surplus. Government critics note it did not spend NT$432 billion appropriated for public works, and has not resolved other problems.

Turnaround time
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's GDP has grown by 5.6% in the 3d qtr of 1996, the highest rate for the past four quarters. The economy has held up well in the face of problems such as a drop in demand for exports and a loss of investments due to the island's confrontation with China. Taiwan's information and electronics industries remain strong, but exports especially of textiles have been affected by reduced demand from China. Other problem areas for Taiwan's economy include a low rate of public spending and modest capital outflow.
