The Taiwanese government has a six-year-plan to move its economy upmarket and into high technology industries. Manufacturers are finding it difficult to compete with other poorer countries as Taiwan becomes richer. Many manufacturers, however, are simply moving jobs offshore.

Taiwan and China were in the same economic position when the Nationalist Party split from the mainland in 1949. Taiwan is now extremely successful, and it is in China's best interests to integrate economically with the island. There are still political problems, however.

Article Abstract:
Taiwan's six-year plan to develop the country's infrastructure will bring the country to a new level of economic maturity if it succeeds. Conditions are somewhat poor today, despite the economic growth the island has achieved.
