Planning chaos leaves the 'other Greenwich' in the lurch
Article Abstract:
The Millennium Dome is being built on the Greenwich Peninsula, and permission has been granted to British Gas's Port Greenwich subsidiary to build 3,000 new homes, retail and industrial space, a hotel and restaurants. However Greenwich's historic town centre has been denied much need funding. Its noisy traffic gyratory discourages tourists, but a plan to build a submerged bypass requires funding of 110 million pounds sterling. It is likely that a high proportion of those visiting the Millennium Experience will want to see historic Greenwich, and there are plans for park-and-ride schemes, and an extension to the DLR.

A very public engineer
Article Abstract:
UK structural engineer Alan Baxter promotes his company Alan Baxter Associates (ABA) as movement engineers, involved in all aspects of the architect profession such as urban design and master planning. He set up his practice in 1974 and many of his associates are located in a warehouse called the Ark, in Clerkenwell, UK. The variety of commissions undertaken by ABA range from the Palace of Westminster to railway waiting rooms. Everybody in the firm pulls together and no one is a specialist. The use that people ultimately make of buildings is an important aspect that Baxter believes is often overlooked.

Behnisch puts a shine on Bristol's Harbourside Centre
Article Abstract:
The client body has chosen architects Behnisch and Partner to design the Harbourside Centre concert and dance halls in Bristol, England. All parties involved discussed the new building at a lecture. Stefan Behnisch explained his belief that the design produced for a competitive tender should not be at the final stage in its evolution, and the clients expressed satisfaction with this openness towards dialogue. Behnisch's concept for the 75 million pounds sterling building includes open views of the river and a roof of a shining material to enhance views down on the building.
