Setting the length of the planning horizon in the vehicle replacement problem
Article Abstract:
The length of the planning horizon in the vehicle replacement problem was found to be a critical parameter in the formulation of replacement policies, and the best parameterization of this horizon which yields the second local minimum of this horizon was found to be the best basis for replacement decisions, both in stochastic and deterministic cost modeling situations. The second local minimum was found to overcome the shortcomings of a replacement policy based on a fixed planning horizon.

A multi-product loading problem: a model and solution method
Article Abstract:
A multi-product loading problem was explored using a binary model that relies on the simultaneous exploration of primal and dual structures generated from the Lagrangian relaxation of the vehicle loading problem. Simulations showed the subset sum problems are obtained as subproblems in to the partial Lagrangian. This was further verified when converge was effected by the algorithm.
