Creating a brown study
Article Abstract:
The UK government has asked architect Richard Rogers to chair an Urban Task Force. Rogers hopes the task force will have considered its aims by Jul 1998 and that it will be able to make a first report by the end of 1998. Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott may hope the task force will arrive at some conclusions for increasing the brownfield element of the house building programme. Rogers is initially interested in examining the use of derelict land to create community, and in examining successful cities to understand what makes them attractive living places.

Planning update
Article Abstract:
Two government initiatives address the impending UK housing crisis. UK Construction Minister Nick Raynsford has indicated that the government is looking for a new approach to house building. This will incorporate higher housing densities but also an increased commitment to better-quality designs and a new approach to housing layout. The government has also launched a database which will call on local authorities to provide information on previously-used sites which are available for redevelopment.
