Planning outlines or battle lines?
Article Abstract:
Two cases heard in the UK courts have led to increased confusion over the amount of detail needed in a outline planning application. A case heard in the courts allowed a planning application to go ahead despite the local authority declaring it lacked sufficient details. In a second case a judge agreed the environmental impact assessment added to an outline planning application did not include enough details and therefore the planning permission was rescinded. Developers are often reluctant to include too much detail due to increasing the cost of applications.

When a house is not a home
Article Abstract:
Home-working is expected to become more popular in Britain as technological improvements are made in telecommunications. Planning permission is only required if the work carried out in the home affects the character of the property as a single dwelling. The Planning Permission - a guide for business booklet issued by the Department of Environment, establishes if the business affects the use of the property as a residence, and focuses on additional traffic, unusual activities for a residential area and unreasonable disturbance to neighbours.

Planning advice: we look at the implications for architects of likely developments in housebuilding, and at the European Spatial Development Perspective
Article Abstract:
It is noted that almost half of all residential development is being undertaken on brown land, previously developed for urban uses. The new government has accepted a target of placing 50% of new housing on brown land, but this may be unambitious. There could also be ongoing battles for permissions in rural areas, but it will go towards meeting the requirement for 4.4 million new homes by 2016.
