Playing the bandh game: government uses strikes as political weapon
Article Abstract:
The Congress party's call for a bandh on Nov 6, 1992, in West Bengal, India to retaliate against police firing at a peaceful rally was intended to reveal discontent with the government of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPI(M). The CPI(M) has been calling several bandhs or political strikes since the central government declared its plans to liberalize the economy. The Marxist leaders oppose the new economic measures, including the entry of multinational corporations and shutting down of sick industrial units, as being harmful to West Bengal's business and industry.

Toothless tiger? Animal protection accord a coup for China
Article Abstract:
An accord between China and India that calls for captive breeding of tigers is being criticized by environmentalists as ineffective. Critics claim that the accord does not address the real problem, environmental degradation, and will allow China to continue trading in rare animal parts. China is the obvious political winner in the accord, gaining the ability to show to the world its efforts in protecting endangered species after years of refusing to stop its illegal animal trade.

Positions of power: India's corporate elite consult ancient guidelines
Article Abstract:
Indian corporate leaders frequently consult vaastu shastra consultants, geomancers equivalent to China's fung shui, regarding organization and decoration in important rooms and buildings. Though dismissed as a scam by the skeptical, the practice has a long tradition in S India, and is spreading elsewhere. Vaastu shastra identifies deities who correlate to geographic directions, and tries to link the type of activity pursued in a room to its presiding deity.
