Poetic injustice: in some parts of the world, poets go in fear of their lives

The Index on Censorship devoted its 25th anniversary issue to poets who have been censored, imprisoned or tortured. Eroticism and rebukes to authority were the most common types of poetry that were suppressed. Poets discussed include Ovid, Jack Mapanje, Alan Ginsberg and Miroslav Holub.

US firms are sponsoring political art exhibits by women and minorities in an attempt to change their images. AT&T, Time Warner Inc, Metropolitan Life Insurance Co and Philip Morris are all active in supporting 'politically correct' art.
