Politics in command
Article Abstract:
The Association of South East Asian Nations (Asean) was formed in 1961 to ensure a tension-free future for the region, and now needs to redefine its future role and activities. Despite its pre-occupation with economic issues, Asean has influenced political stability and co-operation among countries of Southeast Asia. It has provided a forum for informal discussion and handled the tensions related with the Cold War successfully. In the future too, Asean can continue to play a significant role in the region's economic development by ensuring security and healthy diplomatic relations.

Asia's new arms race
Article Abstract:
Asia is involved in an arms race which is diverting attention away from other priorities. Asian countries feel a need to take part in this race for a number of reasons such as a desire for self-reliance and a way to boost economic competitiveness. Defense industries are being set up in Asian countries and this has implications for peace in the region. The arms race will lead to increasing distrust and it is a race that may find no winner.
