Pop politics: all play, little debate at 'festival of democracy'
Article Abstract:
Candidates for the Jun 9, 1992 parliamentary elections in Indonesia seemto be holding little serious campaigning. The nation's three parties namely the ruling Golkar, the Indonesian Democratic Party and the United Democratic Party all resort to entertainment and 'instant crowds' to draw people in their respective rallies. Pop music is heard rather than serious campaign speeches from the candidates. Analysts say that 17 million neophyte voters will determine the winners while intellectuals endorse boycotting the elections which show a lackluster and irrelevant campaign.

No surprises: election confirms Golkar's firm grip on power
Article Abstract:
Indonesian political party Golkar's confidence for a strong showing in the Jun 9, 1992, election was justified by its comfortable victory with 68% of the vote. The 5% drop in Golkar's vote from the 1987 results highlighted military impartiality as well as the integrity of the elections. An expected Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) victory in Jakarta was prevented by the ineligibility of its supporters to vote and strong Golkar support from pilgrims, public servants and ex-patriate Indonesians.

The guessing game: who is going to be Indonesia's next vice-president?
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's upcoming elections will have greater focus on who shall become the country's next vice-president. Beingthat Pres Suharto shall be the only presidential candidate, much fanfare is presented as to who shall become Suharto's deputy. Among the candidates, many regard departing armed forces chief Gen Try Sutrisno as the most likely prospect. However, some observers have not been too keen to endorse Sutrisno, due mainly to Suharto's penchant for making unexpected decisions.
