Portugal to sell EdP, Telecom, Cimpor
Article Abstract:
The Portuguese government has announced plans to privatise 22 companies, including power utility, Electricidade de Portugal (EdP). Sell-offs planned for 1996 alone are expected to raise 380 billion Escudos (Esc). Plans also include the disposal of 40% of cement maker, Cimpor; and 22% of Portugal Telecom; both of which are second offerings. It is hoped that the companies sold will remain under Portuguese control, according to Prime Minister Antonio Guterres.

Article Abstract:
The privatisation of 25% of Portugal Telecom (PT) is likely to be Portugal's first global equity issue, expected to raise around $1.5 billion, through American Depositary Receipt issues. The global issue will be lead by a group headed by Merrill Lynch, and including Banco Essi of Portugal, SG Warburg and Union Bank of Switzerland.

Investors flock to Portugal Telecom
Article Abstract:
The share offering in Portugal Telecom is worth 139 billion Esc and the sale is expected to be finalised on 11 June. 60% of the offer will be sold via a book building system directly to international institutional investors, with 40% going to Portuguese investors via discounts and tax incentives in a pre-registry system.
