Posh Shanghai retailers cut prices as business sags
Article Abstract:
Upscale retailers who set up operations in Shanghai, China, to take advantage of the country's booming economy are now lowering prices and offering discounts of up to 50% in an effort to shore up flagging business. Industry executives stress that they still have confidence in the Chinese market's prospects but they also admit that customers are not very interested in high-priced goods. This view is borne out by the success of other foreign retailers such as Japan's Isetan Co., whose moderately-priced offerings are enjoying healthy sales.

Only a small fraction of Chinese shops sell modern consumer goods, study says
Article Abstract:
Nielsen SRG's study on China's retail industry revealed that less than one percent of all Chinese retail stores carry modern consumer goods. Moreover, it showed that only 3.9 million stores in China, out of a total 12.9 million, are located in cities and other urban areas. However, the study discovered that toiletries such as razor blades, soap and skin cleansers have become staple consumer items in the country.
