Drive to promote regional cooperation in ASEAN tourism has many doubters
Article Abstract:
Speakers at the 1996 ASEAN Tourism Forum in Indonesia called for cooperation in developing a single tourism promotion program for its member countries. However, many tourism officials expressed concern over the proposal because of disparities in tourism growth in the different countries. The strongest opponents of the proposal were Malaysia and the Philippines, which has the lowest tourist traffic among the ASEAN members. Philippine tourism officials noted that the country's location make it highly unattractive to tourists who want to visit the region through a single drop-off point.

Tourists turned back at the gate: as others court visitors, the U.S. denies entry to many(Industry Overview)
Article Abstract:
The US is losing potential revenues because of its tough regulations on issuing tourist visas. About one-fourth of eight million applications for nonimmigrant visas were turned down by the US authorities in 1996. Immigration officials justified the difficult procedures because 40% of the illegal immigrants living in the US came with visas and remained after they expired. The US has generated $64.4 billion in revenues from 44.8 million tourists in 1996.
