Poverty in the treasure-house
Article Abstract:
The British Museum attracts many visitors, but is suffering considerable financial difficulties. The UK government is reducing its grant to the museum, and rental income from the British Library is also to be lost. Its curators are unaccustomed to dealing with financial problems, and further problems arise because the museum lacks a clear mission. It is now faced with a choice between cutting costs or raising funds in new ways, such as charging for admission.
