Prasong's progress: former intelligence chief still commands respect
Article Abstract:
Former Thai intelligence chief Prasong Soonsiri may soon rise again from his role as a Bangkok Member of Parliament with the Palang Dharma party, perhaps to be interior minister after the next election. He and other party members are likely to leave Palang Dharma before then and join another party. Prasong has long experience in the machinations of politics, having served under nine prime ministers since the 1950s, and probably holds dossiers on most of the country's leaders. He began as an air force intelligence officer.

Danger ahead
Article Abstract:
Political analysts believe that the Thai Parliament's vote on a new constitution, due at the end of Sep 1997, faces growing opposition. They fear that opposition will jeopardize the economically-troubled country's chances of recovery, and may lead to civil unrest. Interior Minister Sanoh, spearheading opposition, has the support of local leaders whose lifetime appointments are under threat. The opposition Democrat Party is also planning a no-confidence motion. The situation may lead to some form of compromise.

Confidence man
Article Abstract:
The new Prime Minister of Thailand, Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, will form a coalition between his New Aspiration Party and the Chart Pattana party of Chatichai Choonhavan. There is fear that the government will have problems solving Thailand's economic difficulties, as it lacks experience, and its plans are based on promises. The strength of the New Aspiration Party is in the provinces, which is a disappointment to the business community of Bangkok, the Thai capital.
