Precast versatility on display in Cardiff
Article Abstract:
A speculative office development in Cardiff was designed by Holder Mathias Alcock, with a brief calling for a high standard of design reflecting the building's position facing Cardiff Castle and the civic centre. It is a U shaped building featuring an atrium which forms the main entrance and features a barrel vaulted glazed roof. There are seven levels with three parking levels, and a panoramic lift gives views of the castle. The precast concrete panels were produced from fine white aggregate resembling Portland Stone.

Heritage boss in row over Alsop's London HQ design
Article Abstract:
Sir Jocelyn Stevens, English Heritage chairman, has called for the proposals by Sir Norman Foster for the Greater London Authority headquarters to be chosen in preference to the rival Bloosmbury scheme from Alsop. He has criticised Alsop's scheme for taking a listed building and altering in a way that is fundamentally flawed, whereas Foster's design is for a vacant site. He also has criticism for the procurement process for the GLA building.

Lean and fit, not lean and mean
Article Abstract:
Work processes are expected to see radical changes with concepts such as hot-desking and teleworking emerging. Designers and managers need to understand the business process and the integration with people and places and offices need to become leaner and more sophisticated. Environments need to be adaptable and appropriate to to cultural and environmental needs of different sorts of work.
