Secret world on the edge of London
Article Abstract:
Development planners CIVIX are co-ordinating the development of the rich, complex site of Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills, which was decommissioned by the Ministry of Defence in 1991. The 71 hectare site is important for architectural and archaeological reasons, as it has been producing gunpowder since the 1660s, but the wildlife and vegetation are also rich and varied. The charitable trust, which now owns the site, has received a grant of 6.5 million pounds sterling from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards development of the site, which will be open to visitors from 1999.

Making modern homes in a medieval precinct

Work is being undertaken to restore homes built between the 17th and 19th centuries in the former west front of the ruined Benedictine Abbey in Bury St Edmonds, England. Care has been taken to retain as much of the original work as possible, but extensive structural problems have had to be addressed. The Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England has undertaken research work to try to establish the history of each house.
