Leonardo survives crisis at the Euro Commission
Article Abstract:
The Leonardo II trans-European programme has been approved by the European Council, Commission and Parliament and should commence on schedule on January 1 2000. The programme should focus on vocational training and its importance to social and economic development in Europe, lifelong learning, the encouragement of research and innovation and the development of good practice. Many trainees, students, businesses, academics and institutions have benefitted from the initial Leonardo programme, which has apparently not lost its credibility despite alleged mismangement within the Commission.

Organising the unorganised
Article Abstract:
Membership in British trade unions has decreased from half the workforce in 1979 to only a third today and to stand still, unions need a half a million new members annually. The Trade Unions Council is aware that the long-term decline in union participation can only be reversed by urgent action. The New Unionism campaign aims to meet this challenge and to place organization at the top of the union agenda. The campaign aims to increase membership bases already in existence and break into new industries where union membership is low, primarily the expanding service sector.
