Premier of last resort
Article Abstract:
Army commander Suchinda Kraprayoon, who had previously denied that he wants to head Thailand's government, stepped in as prime minister after being appointed by the coalition of five political parties that dominated the Mar 1992 elections. In reaction, the opposition alliance vowed to push constitutional amendments to limit the military's hold on the government. On the other hand, some think that Suchinda's appointment represents stability, already shown by his choice of competent technocrats to head vital government positions and his refusal to appoint politicians tainted by corruption.

The ringmaster returns: Interim Premier Anand moves to end impasse
Article Abstract:
Anand Panyarachun's Jun 10, 1992, return to Thailand's premiership was a political surprise, although his qualifications for the position cannot be disputed. His former government's effectiveness, due primarily to the technocrats and bureaucrats who helped chart its course, is well documented. Perhaps the strongest sign of confidence in Anand came from the stock market which posted significant gains immediately after the appointment. The prime minister's challenge is to overcome the military's stranglehold in politics to effect clean and peaceful parliamentrary polls before Oct 1992.

Class warriors
Article Abstract:
Thailand's senior military officers pledged support to Gen Suchinda Kraprayoon on his appointment as prime minister. In return, Kraprayoon gave crucial civilian and military posts to his Chulachomkao Military Academy Class 5 classmates, including brother-in-law Gen Issarapong Noonpakdi who was appointed new army commander. The military's stranglehold on Thai politics is expected to remain as Kraprayoon knows only too well that military support is essential for him to retain power in Thailand.
