President Prodi
Article Abstract:
Romano Prodi is to head the European Commission, which has yet to be appointed. An acting commission is carrying out the commission's tasks, and the role of the commission is not clear to many Europeans. There are too many commissioners, duplication of tasks is a problem, and many tasks carried out by commissioners are of little importance. There are a number of major tasks facing the commission, such as issues relating to a European defense policy. A strong commission president will need foresight to predict the future of Europe and will need to recognize the importance of sound institutions.

Romano Prodi, looking for an idea for the EU
Article Abstract:
European Commission head, Romano Prodi, has been criticized for seeking a complex agenda for the 2000 European Union (EU) constitutional conference, but he also faces a difficult task in deciding on the role of the commission. The EU has changed and the commission's role has become less important, while national governments are taking ona wider role. The commission is also seeking to reform itself after a series of scandals. Prodi favors enlargement of the EU, and he needs to avoid distractions in order to focus better on this task.

Prodi's new team
Article Abstract:
The European Commission has new personnel who have to be approved by the European parliament. The head of the commission is Romano Prodi, who aims to reform the management of the commission and ensure that corruption is no longer a problem. He also faces other challenges such as developing a common foreign policy, and enlarging the European Union. Some of his goals are laudable, and they can be best achieved by not trying to take on too much. There is also a need for the confidence of citizens in the European Union to be increased.
