Pretty pictures, bad art
Article Abstract:
It may seem that the Malaysian art scene is booming with pieces by key artists rising by as much as 300% over the past four years. However many paintings are decorative pieces, and the banality of the pieces is blamed on the lack of expertise by art dealers in Kuala Lumpur. Despite the urbanization, modernization and increasing 'cybering' of society in Kuala Lumpur, their effects are not addressed, and many artists prefer to produce inoffensive abstract works, instead of casting a critical eye. Also the National Art Gallery is ineffectual in promoting art, and some paintings it agreed to buy are still not paid for three years on.

Ties that bind
Article Abstract:
Renaud Gillet is a French book collector who is selling much of his collection since his children do not wish to take it on. Part of the collection was inherited, and Gillet also purchased works himself. There are important works from the 19th century, as well as 20th century books, especially art books, in the collection. Gillet was friendly with a bookseller called Hean Hugues who in turn knew many Surrealists, and this helped Gillet to enrich his collection.
