Signs of an upturn
Article Abstract:
The quarterly survey of architects' workload shows a 13% increase in new commissions during the 1st qtr, 1993. Most of the new work comes from the private sector with office and industrial work showing the greatest increases. Housing, retail and leisure projects are expected to increase as the general economy recovers from recession. The Midlands, East Anglia and London, England have had the largest increases in new work and this is reflected in the optimistic attitudes of architects in those regions. Staff levels have remained stable during the quarter.

Poised for an upturn
Article Abstract:
Germany's economy seems in danger of stagnating, though Economics Minister Gunter Rexrodt says it is merely gathering itself for another strong push upward. Wage hikes averaging 3% and currency appreciation have led private economists to lower their expectations, to GDP growth of 2% to 3% in both 1995 and 1996. Private consumption is weak, exports are growing slowly, and after intial liveliness, business investment is slack for the year. Job creation is particularly poor in western states.

Allegations of collusion between Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and organized crime have brought the country's government near to collapse. The Republican People's Party has joined the parties opposing Yilmaz, and it appears very likely that his government will fall. With Turkey facing serious economic problems, the timing of the scandal could not have been worse.
