Private business: who speaks for Asia?
Article Abstract:
The Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC) is the best candidate to provide the business leadership that Southeast Asia desperately needs to implement freer trade. Despite occasional dissension, the PBEC can speak forthrightly where politicians fear to tread and is in a position to proclaim what businesses really need, rather than what trading blocs desire. Political debate will set the tone and standards for regional business activity until business speaks loudly and coherently for themselves, which the PBEC can accomplish.

South Asia needs the great powers
Article Abstract:
The US and India should cooperate on regional issues and not be distracted by disagreements over Kashmir and similar differences. By linking commercial and strategic policies the two countries can better respond to a shrinking world and the growth of Asia. In particular, they can cooperate on regional security through regular naval exercises, officer exchanges, and joint naval research projects. The US should help India build high-tech military equipment, and India can offer repair and refit facilities for US Navy ships.
