Scraply islands: the Philippines

Chinese attempts at occupation of a few islands in the Spratly Islands and Scarborough Shoal chains have angered the Philippines, who had recently tried to improve diplomatic relations with China. The Philippines may ask the US, whose military bases it had expelled recently, for military help.

Bay for sale: the Philippines
Article Abstract:
Subic Bay has been made an economic zone, and the authority in charge of the vacated base is looking for foreign investors. The base has an airport and deep-sea port, and experts believe that the base could produce 10% of the gross national product in five years.

The US Navy is closing its base in Subic Bay, Philippines, after 88 years. The base accounted for a great deal of commerce in that area and many are sorry to see it go. Philippine officials hope the location can be used as a tourist or commercial center.
